Interior Design trends 2021 – the biggest looks for the New Year
Are you looking to reinvent and refresh your home for the year ahead? We’ve pulled together some of our favourite interior design trends forecasted to be BIG in 2021...
Mix modern with vintage in a bathroom
Modern vintage mix is increasing in popularity as people move away from that very sleek, contemporary monochrome look that's been on trend for decades. This look is more eclectic, more bathroom meets... living room. Hang ornate mirrors, add in vintage chairs, pick bold colours! We love the mix of this statement contemporary freestanding bath with the more vintagey elements of the room.

Two-toned cabinets
Two-toned cabinets are another type of renovation trend that will surely make waves in 2021. You can follow this trend by painting cabinets installed in one area in different colours. A frequent iteration of the look includes a darker color for the lower cabinets and a lighter shade for shelves that sit higher up. Think white cabinets above the sink paired with shades of blue, black, or brown below. However, there are no set rules for which color combinations or design elements work best.

Cottagecore
'Due to the events of 2020, I think that cottagecore, nostalgia and the need for comfort are all here to stay,' says Instagram influencer and blogger Paula Sutton of Hill House Vintage.
'Cottagecore is something that started off as very simplistic but I think it can also be mixed with touches of glamour to create a luxe traditional style. Elegant vintage style barware, gilded cutlery and statement gold accessories are all ways to get the look whilst staying on budget and touches of British quirk will keep the look feeling grounded.'
Think: a cuter version of Rustic Vogue, with ginghams and checks vying for attention with vintage prints and motifs – all set within a muted, pastel palette.

Gold Finishes
Now that taps are available in a wide choice of colors and finishes, sinks are following, too. Aesthetics have made an impact in wet areas just as they have in furniture and appliance design, with color, shape, size and material heavily influenced by the overall look of the room.
'Sinks have moved up on the scale of importance in kitchen design,' says Joan Fraser, product development and training manager for Smeg. 'Models are introduced to meet customers’ demands for a sink which, in addition to being purely functional, also makes a definitive style statement.

Handleless design
The latest contemporary designs are all about a multi-tasking, free-flowing design with a paired-back look. Technological advances in push-open and close doors means that it has become possible to dispense with handles in both wall and base cabinets. If you prefer not to have push-open cupboards, then recessed handles provide the same sleek look and can be lined with contrasting colours and materials to add interest.
'Handleless kitchen cabinets are one of the biggest trends for 2021 for more pared-back, streamlined look. It’s all about simplicity and a focus on cabinetry details,' explains Busola Evans, Kitchen and Bathroom Supplement Editor.
