TIPS FOR TAKING THE STRESS OUT OF RENOVATING (PART 1)
Building or renovating should be one of the most exciting and rewarding journeys of your life. Unfortunately, anyone who has gone through a renovation knows the highs and lows associated with the renovating process; The lead up - when your evenings are blissfully taken up by scrolling through Pinterest and building a dream board of ideas. The anticipation of finding the right builder who can see your vision and come within your budget and the often-stressful periods throughout the process. Many of these factors can be avoided and we are here to tell you our top tips to help take the stress out of your project journey through a series of blog posts…
1. Team
Whether you start your renovation journey with a builder, design & construction firm, draftsman, architect or interior designer you need to feel comfortable with them. From initial contact, the professionals should be able to clearly indicate the various stages and direction to go down for your unique project. You should feel they are open to working collaboratively with you and all other parties involved to ensure the best possible outcome in regards to design, buildability, and pricing efficiency.
It is this choice, that when made well, can ensure a smooth journey through the renovation process. Always trust your gut and ask yourself the question, can I build a good working relationship with this person/group? Do they have the same values and understand what we are trying to achieve?
2. Have a project timeline schedule
“Failing to plan” will lead to “planning to fail”. Transparent construction timelines are essential to both yourself, the home owner & the builder. Timelines are the backbone to an efficient, free flowing project journey. It ensures the proper co-ordination of all professionals and contractors involved to get you to your project completion as simply as possible. It also assists in determining critical paths, milestones and any complex stages that need attention and careful planning.
For you, the homeowner, a project timeline will answer a number of your questions; How long will I be disrupted for? How long will I need to source alternative accommodation for? How long will my items need to be in storage for? What is happening on a day to day/week to week basis? While we cannot promise there will be no deviations from the schedule, as there are elements out of a builders control (e.g weather) we are however confident in our ability to provide you an accurate timeline which will bring you certainty when working with us.
3. Schedule to suit your family.
Sure, a renovation is inevitably going to disrupt elements of your home and routine, however there are often ways to ensure disruptions are kept to a minimum. For example, avoid having the project taking place when you know you may have family or friends visiting or when the kids may be undertaking exams, perhaps choosing a time you have a holiday planned so you can vacate the home during the most disruptive part of the process.
If you are staying on-site throughout the build, we have a variety of measures to ensure we minimise our disruption to you. We allocate dust barriers and temporary protection/hoarding options and we make sure we are extremely tidy & organised to minimise the disruption to your everyday life.
